Selenite Gypsum Crystals
From the
Great Salt Plains
National Wildlife Refuge
(near Jet, Oklahoma – USA)
Oklahoma Crystal
A group of elementary students from
Moore, OK
petitioned legislature to establish these unique hourglass selenite crystals as the
state crystal
in 2005.
Fragile Crystals
Selenite
crystals are not hard like quartz but
soft crystalized gypsum
. Adventurers can seasonally visit the Great Salt Plains near Jet, OK located within the National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can dig down just inches into the salty surface to find them.
Miraculous Formation
Salty water, dirt, sand, clay, and the hot sun evaporating water over time help to compact and concentrate the minerals allowing for
phenomenal
crystalline formation to occur.
Digging Season
Within the refuge established in 1930, the annual digging season is sunrise to sunset from April 1 through October 15 and based the migratory patterns of breeding birds that build nests in the holes dug by enthusiastic
treasure
hunters in designated areas.
Unique Crystal Pattern
The curious
hourglass shape
is unique to these crystals. The brownish tan color comes from the presence of iron oxide in the sand.
This is the
only
place in the world where someone can find crystals like this. Some of the largest crystal blades measure up to 7” and clusters weigh up to 38 pounds.
Presentation
These crystals are sealed and preserved in epoxy resin.
