    Description

Extremely Rare Collectible Morenci Turquoise Mineral Specimen
    The Morenci Turquoise Story
The Copper Mountain, Morenci, mining district is located approximately 115 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, and was discovered in 1864 as a by-product of an open-pit copper mining operation.
The owners failed to recognize the high value in the turquoise and were focused, solely, on the copper as a mining export. When they became aware that the
workers had begun to pursue the turquoise, rather than the copper, and had begun to “lunch-box” it, they quickly mined the turquoise and buried it beneath thousands of tons of waste rock.
In doing so, they hoped to redirect attention to the copper.
From 1956 to 1984, the turquoise rights were granted to William “Lucky” Brown who, with his family, continued to mine the turquoise until the lease ended.
Today’s southwestern copper mines produce little turquoise, largely due to the changes in mining methods.
The crushing and acid-washing of the copper ore sadly
    destroy the turquoise.
Morenci turquoise is highly prized for its beautiful blue colors that range from a light to very dark blue, as well as its unusual pyrite or “fool’s gold” matrix, that when polished, often resembles silver.
    This exquisite
turquoise is one of the most famous and rare of all the American
    turquoise and is exceedingly collectible.
