Demantoid garnets were mined in Northern Madagascar in 2009, south of the
Nosy Be archipelago, to be precise.
Chrome or chromium is responsible for the striking green.  Species Distinction. Though both tsavorite and demantoid are of the garnet family,
they are different at the species level. Tsavorite is a grossularite garnet and demantoid is an andradite garnet. Demantoid garnets have a unique
inclusion called horsetails. Tsavorite has a superior hardness, which would only be relevant for faceting or jewellery.
If you were intersted in extracting the gems from this matrix, there are at least 4 visible ones.

The mine flooded and is unlikely to be reactivated.
