You get the exact one shown here: #. Be sure to scroll to see all 12 photos as each one shows a different view .Literal mirror faces. I have to photograph these in a shaded area as these can't easily be photographed in direct sunlight because the faces are identical to a mirror.
This is a Graves Mountain Rutile crystal - the type locality for rutile . This crystal has mirror faces - literally. In bright sunlight you can see hints of red color. It is so dark red that it looks black in all but the strongest lighting.
This crystal looks many times better than in the photographs due to difficulty photographing such highly reflective crystals.
This is an extremely nice rutile crystal that looks much nicer than the photos suggests.
The specimen measures 4" x 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" or in metric
10.0 X 6.2 X 7.1 cm
. This weighs 1 pound 8.55 ounces or 696 grams.
This is shown with enlarged photos and will display on your screen many times larger than life. There are 12 photographs so please look at them all.
This specimen is on display at my rock shop in McDonough, Ga.
Other notes on rutile from Graves Mountain ( this is just general info that is not specific to the individual crystal in the listing).
Rutile is titanium dioxide and is basically a titanium crystal. One look tells you that it is a metal and if not, picking it up certainly will leave no doubts. Rutile crystals are actually so dark red that it appears black. Some reflective surfaces are purest metallic and look just like the mirror in your bathroom! Dark minerals are hard to photograph and shiny minerals are hard to photograph but when you combine the two qualities it makes it extremely difficult to photograph.
In order to get my camera to focus and have the proper exposure I have to take some of the photos in a shaded area with a few under direct sunlight. Rutile at Graves more commonly twins than not and can twin in many different ways, and can also twin in more than one way in the same crystal, so that combination can yield all sorts of shapes and combinations. Due to the nature of rutile being so metallic and shiny, chipping doesn't show when you look at it, because the area at the chip reflects light in the same manner as the unmarred surfaces. It is far different and far more forgiving than a translucent or transparent crystal like quartz or aquamarine or any clear crystal that you can name. So, any slight blemishes do not stand out and can be elusive even when looking for them.
Everything on ebay is rare, or so everyone claims. But rutile actually is rare. Graves Mountain is the type locality for rutile crystals and there is no other known location that produces such large crystals as the ones that came from this location.
