    THIS IS A
    MINERAL SPECIMEN OF ALLOPHANE.
    SMALL
    PIECES IN A GLASS BOTTLE 9 X 4 cm
    .  THE LONGEST PIECES ARE 3+ cm IN MAXIMUM DIRECTION.  THEY ARE FROM THE
    4th LEVEL,
    JUANITA MINE, KELLY, MAGDALENA DISTRICT, SOCORRO CO., NEW MEXICO
    .  THE SPECIMEN WAS COLLECTED IN 1958.
    ALLOPHANE IS A RARE AMORPHOUS HYDROUS SILICATE OF ALUMINUM.  THE COLORATION IS DUE TO THE INCLUSION OF COPPER.
    ALLOPHANE DEHYDRATES READILY AND BREAKS UP AND IS THEREFORE BEST KEPT SEALED IN A JAR.
    THIS IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE SPECIES.
