    Description

Vintage Ellery Arms San Francisco Ellery Hunter Knife made by Henckels Twin Works in Solingen, Germany. This knife is an early example dating from the 1910’s. The knife is in outstanding shape considering its age with only a chip out of the handle. See the pictures. The sheath is also in outstanding shape with the original d-ring holder. Bernard Levine states in his Knife World Article of May 1983 with the catchy title “Get it at Ellery’s” that William Ellery of San Francisco had dreamed of opening the finest outdoor outfitter and sporting goods emporium in the west if not the entire world. Ellery opened his place in 1909 in San Francisco as Ellery Arms Company (inc). The first Ellery Hunters were probably made in Germany by Henckels. Later on it is said they were made by other makers in the USA by the Union Cutlery Co., Keen Kutter and Cattarugus. William Ellery received a patent on his knife design in 1916, but he had already been selling this outstanding knife for several years. This is the only example I have found for sale on line in the last several years. This is a very rare and fine example of this knife.
